Lufkin is a midsized city in East Texas and has several Dog Friendly places to explore with your pup! Check out a few places that we’ve enjoyed recently:
- Lufkin Dog Park: Just 20 minutes away from Lazy Pines Texas. This is a very nice dog park! There was plenty of shade and the grass was lush (surprisingly so for summer). There is a water station and some benches and it was very clean. They have two separate sections, one for big dogs and one for little. We met some locals who were super friendly! The waste station didn’t have bags, so remember to bring some with you.
- Azalea Trail: The trailhead is right next to the dog park (near the volleyball court & pavilions). It’s a 2 mile walking trail (one way). It’s a mix of asphalt and sand. Parts are shaded and it runs along a creek. There’s benches along the way and safety call boxes. The trail was very quiet when we visited (late on a Saturday morning). We were advised not to let the dogs play in the creek as there have been gator sightings! Also, good to bring bug spray in case of mosquitos.
- Kit McConnico Park: This park is 30 minutes from Lazy Pines. There are 5 miles of trails that wind through a heavily wooded area. Most of it is fully shaded and the multiple trails are marked via colored painted bands on the trees. There is a parking lot at the main trailhead. It was very quiet on a Saturday around lunch time. There are a few bridges and creek beds along the way. Best to watch out for snakes (we didn’t see any) and carry bug spray.
- Lake Livingston State Park: A little further out, about 40 minutes from Lazy Pines but worth the trip out. There are several miles of trails throughout the park. There’s a $6 admission to get into the park (unless you are have a Texas State Park Annual Pass!) The trails wind through the Piney Woods and are well marked. There’s even a 1 mile loop boardwalk trail which is great if trails are muddy since it’s an elevated boardwalk the entire time. The park is dog friendly, and required to be on leash.
- Lake Livingston: There are several marinas if you want to boat. Beacon Bay Marina is closest to Lazy Pines and was very easy to use. The lake is the 3rd largest in Texas, so it’s HUGE. Which means you can always find a quiet place to boat, swim, wakeboard, etc. There are boat rentals at the lake, including kayak rentals. Pine Island is an uninhabited small island with a beach towards the southern end of the lake. Dogs welcome, but keep an eye out for them, especially near shore, as there have been reported gators.
Lazy Pines Cabins are Cabins designed for Dogs! Our newest location, in East Texas, has two cabins on seven acres. Located in Corrigan Texas, it’s conveniently located between Lufkin & Livingston, about 90 minutes north of Houston.
