Ruidoso Winter

Looking for a winter getaway packed with fun? Ruidoso has you covered! Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or prefer relaxing with your four-legged friend, Ruidoso offers winter activities for everyone. Here are some must-try experiences to make your trip unforgettable, including dog friendly options!

1. Skiing & Snowboarding at Ski Apache

Ski Apache has officially kicked off the 2024 season!  Only 14 miles from Lazy Pines, the scenic drive up is a must see even for non-skiers! Bonus: leashed dogs are allowed in certain areas, so bring your pup along to play in the snow. New in 2024:  They now sell lift tickets online with pickup at multiple vending locations.  Open most weekends.

2. Snow Tubing at Winter Park

Just five minutes from Lazy Pines, Winter Park offers more than just snow tubing! Tubing is dependent on snow conditions, so check their website for up-to-date information.  Even if there isn’t snow, they also offer a super fast mountain coaster and ziplining. Pro tip: visiting later in the day is less crowded. While pups can’t tube, they are welcome on-leash in the park area.

3. Sleigh Rides Through the Upper Canyon

Experience the magic of Ruidoso with a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the picturesque Upper Canyon, offered from Thanksgiving to January 4th. Grindstone Stables also offers horseback rides throughout the winter. Friendly, quiet dogs are welcome on the sleigh if you bring your own blanket to manage shedding.

4. Outdoor Ice Skating at Wingfield Park

Glide into the holiday spirit with outdoor ice skating at Wingfield Park, open from Thanksgiving  through January 31st. Skate rentals are available, and while pups can’t join on the ice, they’re welcome in the park, making it a great outing for the whole family.

5. Winter Hiking Adventures

Ruidoso’s trails are perfect for year-round hiking. From serene forest paths to more challenging routes, there’s a trail for every explorer. Don’t miss our blog featuring the best dog-friendly trails in the area. Pro Tip:  Wear sunscreen even in the winter!

6. Off-Road Winter Tours

Get your adrenaline pumping in an off-road vehicle from Backcountry Attitudes! They have multiple vehicle types (open air and closed) with heaters so it’s perfect even in the winter.  AND they allow dogs to join the fun!

7. Performances & Live Events

The holiday spirit is alive in Ruidoso with events like the annual Christmas Tree lighting, festive live shows, and weekly music performances. Discover Ruidoso offer the most comprehensive and up to date list of events.

8. Wildlife Watching and Scenic Drives

Winter is a great time to spot wildlife like elk, deer, and wild horses in and around Ruidoso. Scenic drives, such as the one up to Ski Apache or over to Cloudcroft, are stunning this time of year—don’t forget your camera! Pro Tip: Bring snow chains if you don’t have 4WD. The main roads in town are cleared very quickly, but neighborhood and side roads can be quite slippery after it snows.
